Web hosts and internet service providers (ISPs) are given a “safe harbor” from copyright infringement claims if they provide notice and takedown procedures. This means that if they offer an accessible method for us to contact them and create a dialogue for taking down stolen material, they they in turn cannot be sued. This is good news for copyright owners and also good news for ISPs.
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) became U.S. law in 1998. There are many provisions of this law. The ones that affect copyright owners are the ones that Stop Web Pirates is concerned with.
